Belize is a birders paradise.......

I was there for a week in December and shot hundreds of photos of beautiful birds. This was my second trip to Belize and my first time on the Ambergris Cayes. I didn't know if I would see as many birds on the Cayes as I did on the mainland of Belize. Was I surprised! We stayed at Captain Morgan's Retreat and had a great time. I got up early every morning and spent several hours walking behind the retreat grounds and down the dirt road for miles each way. There are several locations along the road where debris is piled up here and there but all I saw was incredible birds. The first morning I found a colony of woodpeckers hanging out in some dead trees behind Captain Morgan's. There are acres of mangroves behind the retreat so it's typical to see Herons, Egrets, Osprey and Wood Storks flying overhead. Brown Pelicans and Cormorants hang out near the boat dock while Egrets and Herons hunt in shallow water along the shoreline out front. In the evenings Yellow-crowned Night-Herons would take up hunting. The Yellow-headed Parrot in my pictures lives there on site and is very friendly.

We also ventured into San Pedro Town and rented a golf cart and went to the opposite end of the Caye. We found even more remote areas with mangroves and of course.....more birds! While there, I saw a Roseate Spoonbill for the first time as it flew over in the distance. I was so excited! We hoped to find where it landed but we were not successful. Darn!  One of our birding highlights was a private excursion to Bird Island. We connected up with Carlos Franco from Franco Tours and he took us out to the small island for an amazing experience. Make sure to check out my photo page for Bird Island, Belize.
